Work has begun at Camber Sands on a new facility that will provide a huge boost for both residents and visitors.
Rother District Council is building a Welcome Centre which will improve safety, support, and information for visitors to the famous dunes, and provide a community space for residents to use all year round.
The building which is being delivered by Baxall Construction is scheduled to complete in Spring 2025.
Councillor Hazel Timpe, Lead Member for Neighbourhood Services and Tourism at Rother District Council said: “This new facility will enable Coastal Operations to thrive and support visitors’ safety and enjoyment on the beautiful beach at Camber. An environmentally and economically sustainable building will help the Council continue to support the local community in Camber.”
Lorna Ford, Chief Executive at Rother District Council, said: “We are excited to have started on site. Totally funded by grants including £1.7 million from central government, this project is a fabulous investment in new facilities for local people and businesses – and for visitors to this wonderful area.”
Engagement work with the local community has taken place ahead of construction work. During the summer – working with architecture practice, DK-CM – the Council held two, free workshops funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. The workshops explored local habitats, wildlife, and dune management, with the aim of raising awareness of the environment that surrounds the site.
