What we collect

We collect any items (up to 12) which can reasonably be carried and lifted into a van by 2 people.

The bulky items must be located outside at ground level (no collections via steps or lifts), in the open air, in clear sight and an accessible place by 7am on the morning of collection, all items must be present in one location. The preferred location is at the front of the property, you must specify on your order the location where your items will be presented for collection.

If you put a bulky item out with your normal household rubbish or recycling the council will not collect it. The collection has to be pre-arranged and paid for before the items will be taken away.

Full Terms and Conditions of the Bulky Waste collection service

Bulky waste items containing persistent organic pollutants (POPs)

The Environment Agency has implemented new rules for collecting and disposing of waste containing persistent organic pollutants (POPs).

If an item is ripped or damaged and contains materials like foam, leather, synthetic leather, or other fabrics, it must be taped, wrapped, or bagged. For example, if a sofa has a tear exposing the foam, the tear must be taped over, or if a cushion is ripped, it should be placed in a bag or sack.

We cannot collect items that are not properly secured. This measure is to protect those handling these items.

This applies to items such as:

  • Cushions and beanbags
  • Office chairs with soft padding
  • Sofas, armchairs, sofa beds, and futons
  • Stools, poufs, and ottomans
  • Upholstered furniture.

Reuse schemes

Before throwing away household items, such as electrical goods or bulky furniture that are still of good quality, think about ways of re-using or donating your waste to local charities.

Please refer to: Re-Use and Avoiding Waste

If you are unable to find a way to re-use your items, the Household Waste Recycling Site (HWRS) at Pebsham (Hastings), Mountfield and elsewhere in East Sussex accept bulky items and waste which cannot be disposed of via your normal collection but you must be a domestic tax paying resident in East Sussex to use these sites.
