Survey work at the Northeye site – Council statement

Rother District Council has received a number of complaints recently regarding work taking place at the Northeye site in Bexhill.

Following a site visit, the Council has established that the work involves ground investigations and surveys and is being carried out by the Home Office.

This type of work is not a breach of planning control and is a normal activity in the design phase of a proposed scheme. This is part of the assessment stage only – the Government has not made any firm decisions on its plans for the future use of the site.

The Council was not notified in advance that these works were taking place and, therefore, could not give any warning to local residents.

We will continue to push the Home Office to provide more information on their proposals to use the site as a centre for people seeking asylum so that we can provide further reassurance to residents.

We remain committed to seeking to ensure that any use of the Northeye site is lawful and acceptable and that the views of the local community are heard by all bodies responsible for making decisions.

Members of the public can direct their queries/concerns to the following generic email address: public.enquiries@homeoffice.gov.uk
