From the Leader – Friday, November 1st

This week we launch an awareness campaign encouraging residents to check their eligibility to access Council Tax discounts.

In my last column I spoke about the Pension Fund and how that could help residents struggling to make ends meet, and the Council Tax Reduction Scheme could also go some way to help make eligible residents’ lives a little more comfortable.

Eligibility depends on where people live, their circumstances and household income, and we are urging people to check whether they can access the benefit via the Citizen’s Advice website.

To find out more about the Council Tax Reduction Scheme and other support available for residents in need of support you can visit our benefits pages.

Summer feels like a lifetime ago, but last week I met with representatives of the various partners who work tirelessly to keep visitors to Camber Sands safe to review the summer season and look ahead to next year.

These meetings involving emergency services, the RNLI, the county council and the local MP, are vital to help us identify issues and, more importantly, solutions that improve the experience of both visitors and residents during the busy summer months.

There are no easy answers with Camber. We have a stunning beach, which people want to visit and enjoy when the weather is good, and a village which regularly experiences gridlock due to the sheer number of cars attempting to access the beach via a single road.  But we will continue to work together throughout the winter and in the lead up to next summer in a bid to keep visitors and residents as safe as possible.

Back to the here and now and we are about to embark on bonfire season.

Like much of East Sussex, Rother has a strong tradition and history of hosting amazing bonfire celebrations, and this year is no different with many events happening across the district.

Tomorrow (Saturday, November 2) the skies above Battle will be illuminated with a bonfire and firework display.   The event includes a procession for which roads will be closed. Details for the event can be found at www.battelbonfire.co.uk

On Saturday, November 9, a procession will set off from Mason Road in Rye heading through the town centre and arriving at the bonfire site on Rye Town Salts.  I encourage anyone attending to check out the details of the event and road closures at www.ryebonfire.co.uk/programme/

It will be Robertsbridge’s turn on Saturday, November 16 when a procession will move from Station Road to the recreation ground where a bonfire and firework display takes place.

Again, road and footpath closures will be in place through the day and evening.  More information on this event can be found via www.visit1066country.com/whats-on/robertsbridge-bonfire-night-2024-p641171

To help societies running theses events, we would ask those attending to take their rubbish home. Litter enforcement officers will be working in these areas as usual.
