Question 41/18

Question:

Please can someone explain why the planned Bexhill fireworks and the Christmas lights are not going ahead. My family along with others enjoy the events. Surely the town benefits from having these family orientated events to encourage people to the town. I admire the hard work which has been dedicated to do something positive . As a mother of three teenagers it is difficult to find safe and local activities for them . Please consider changing your minds or I fear we will drive more people and businesses away from the town. Answer:

A safety advisory group, SAG, which consists of the emergency services and is chaired by a Council Officer met on 4 October to consider an event safety plan (EMP) produced by Shining Lights Ltd. The group meets a few times a year to give advice to event organisers  to protect public safety. This was the second meeting of the group, following a meeting last month, which had given extensive advice to the event organisers. Unfortunately, the SAG decided that the EMP submitted had major failings, including the absence of a fire risk assessment, crowd management, evacuation, first aid and a transport plans. Shining Lights Ltd had also failed to apply for a road closure order in time. (08/10/2018)
