Question 27/25

Question:

ESCC are regularly posting on Facebook the need to recycle or at least dispose of small batteries ( remote controllers, toys, gadgets etc) using the District Councils refuse/recycling collections.

A simple process of placing your batteries in a bag on top of your wheelie bin ensures the operatives will segregate and comply with the policy of not dumping then in landfill or normal recycling. Judging by the response, the operatives do the complete opposite of this and ignore it.

I can only presume the operatives are working on ‘ job and knock’ getting the round done as quickly as possible and finishing their shift ignoring time consuming procedures of sorting batteries but leaving wheelie bins strewn across the pavement?

Answer:

Small portable electrical goods and batteries which are contained within a carrier bag can be placed on top of your scheduled collection bin and the bin men should place these in a separate compartment on the collection vehicle.  However, occasionally the compartment becomes full before the collection round is completed resulting in the crews unbale to collect further items. In this instance they have no option other than to leave them in situ. Batteries should always be collected separately and should never be put in the rubbish bins as they are a potential fire hazard and unfortunately fires do start in waste vehicles on an all too frequent basis.
