Popular park flies flag for excellence again!

Bexhill’s Egerton Park is proudly flying another Green Flag Award signalling the fourteenth time in a row the space has been recognised for overall excellence.

The town’s well-loved park, hailed yet again as one of the country’s best, has been handed the coveted accolade as the internationally recognised standard for parks and green spaces celebrates its 30th year.

The Green Flag Award scheme is run by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy and recognises well-managed parks and green spaces nationwide.

The award is presented to green spaces that boast the highest possible environmental standards, are beautifully maintained and offer much for visitors to enjoy.

Cllr Hazel Timpe, portfolio holder for neighbourhood services and tourism at Rother District Council, said: “To learn that Egerton Park has received a Green Flag Award for the fourteenth consecutive year is absolutely fantastic.

“This recognition is a reflection of the dedication that goes into maintaining the park to such a high standard. I would like to thank our contractor idverde, our officers and the Bexhill in Bloom volunteers who all work so hard to keep the park in peak condition with limited resources whilst the council continues to face significant financial challenges.”

Facilities available at the park include a children’s play-zone, refreshment kiosk, refurbished tennis courts, kickabout and pickleball courts and a large lawn for informal games.

There is also a sensory garden incorporating planting, willow tunnels and sculptures, and the park has public toilets and a Changing Places facility.

Cllr Timpe continued: “With many more summer days ahead of us and the long school holidays approaching, I encourage people to visit the park and make the most of this amazing and well-cared-for local space. Arrange a game of tennis with friends, see your children enjoying the playground, or just relax with a good book in the tranquil surroundings.”

Egerton Park is one of a record breaking 2,391 spaces in the UK to achieve the award this year.

Paul Todd MBE, Green Flag Award manager at Keep Britain Tidy, said: “Parks are essential public spaces that support our wellbeing, our communities and our economy. Yet for millions of people, particularly in the most deprived areas, local parks simply don’t feel safe or welcoming.

“With public services under pressure, investing in parks is not a luxury, it’s a practical, preventative solution and one of the most visible ways to improve people’s quality of life.

Mr Todd added: “All those involved in maintaining Egerton Park have shown what can be achieved when parks are properly supported and managed. As we celebrate 30 years of the Green Flag Award, we want every community to have access to green spaces like this that are safe, welcoming and maintained to a high standard. Congratulations to everyone involved.”
