Financial help for business restart

Businesses across Rother can apply for financial help to support them to reopen safely as lockdown restrictions are eased.

Many businesses will be allowed to reopen from April 12, with more to follow in the coming weeks and, as part of the national Restart Grant Scheme, Rother District Council has received £9.3 million to help businesses reopen.

Grants of up to £6,000 for non-essential retail businesses and £18,000 for hospitality, accommodation, leisure, personal care and gym businesses will be available to those who deal face-to-face with the public.

The amount of grant a business receives, will be dependent on the rateable value of each business premises.

The district council has also agreed to use what remains of its discretionary grant funding to support businesses not qualifying for the latest funding stream. The council also wants to use some of the funds to promote and stimulate new jobs through supporting new businesses and the expansion of existing businesses in Rother.

Malcolm Johnston, chief executive of Rother District Council said: “We know that many local businesses have been badly hit by the necessary restrictions put in place to slow the spread of Covid-19.

“We want to make sure that, when it is safe for businesses to reopen, they have as much support as possible to enable to get back to fully trading and I would encourage them to get in touch and find out what help is available.”

Applications for the Restart Grant close on Wednesday, June 30.
