Event will help over 50s stay healthy and active

Over 50s can find out about activities and get tips to help them stay healthy and enjoy life at a special event.

Ageing Well in the 21st Century will give residents the chance to meet local groups, try out new activities and find out ways to improve their health and wellbeing.

Organised by Rother District Council and Active Rother, the event will take place at De La Warr Pavilion on Tuesday, September 14.

Cllr Hazel Timpe, Rother District Council’s portfolio holder for communities, culture and tourism, said: “This event is a great opportunity for residents to find out how they can stay safe and healthy, with the chance to try out some new activities and meet local groups.

“We are extremely grateful to the support of Dr Elena Mucci, Consultant Geriatrician and Dr Michael Jackson, a pharmacist in Cardiology, who will be giving a talk on how residents can lead a healthy, active and fulfilling life, and East Sussex Director of Public Health Darrell Gale, who will open the event.”

Activities from 3pm include a dance class, seated massages and acrylic art painting and make up demonstrations.  There will also be information and advice from groups and organisations including Active Rother, Rother Voluntary Action, Freedom Leisure, walking cricket, Younique Wellbeing, Dance-Ability, Parkinson’s Group, Care for the Carers, Autumn Years Fitness, East Sussex CCG and One You East Sussex. Further information including the list of stalls and activity sessions will be available at www.activerother.org.uk

From 6pm to 8.30pm, Dr Mucci and Dr Jackson will give a talk focussing on how the last 18 months have affected people’s health and wellbeing and social isolation.  They will also cover topics such as prevention of falls, vitamin D deficiency, avoiding incontinence, ways to avoid dementia, the impact of smoking, alcohol and diet.

The afternoon event is open to all, with residents urged to come near the start to take advantage of the free sessions but booking for the evening talk is essential. Tickets can be booked online at www.dlwp.com/how-to-age-well
