Council warning over energy rebate scams

Rother District Council is warning its residents to be on the lookout for energy rebate scams as official letters go out this week.

Residents who do not pay their council tax by direct debit will be receiving letters from the Council to enable them to claim their £150 council tax energy rebate. The authority is keen for people to claim their money but also to be aware of any potential scams.

Councillor Doug Oliver, Leader of Rother District Council, said: “We want our residents to receive their money but also to keep safe and avoid scams.

“The council will never phone, text or email residents to ask them to give their bank details or other personal information to process these payments. So I would urge everyone who doesn’t pay their council tax by direct debit, to wait for their official Rother District Council letter and follow the instructions.”

The Local Government Association has also warned about possible cold-calling scams as councils across the UK make the payments during April and May.
