Construction of Rother District Council’s flagship sustainable housing development to kick off in Spring 2022.
The Blackfriars site has been allocated for development for many years and was granted planning permission in April 2021.
The development, which features 70 affordable homes as well as several Passivhaus and earth sheltered properties, will provide much needed high-quality homes for the residents of Battle.
All 200 homes have been designed to be low-carbon dwellings and will be constructed to maximise the use of solar energy and renewable energy technologies.
The Blackfriars scheme will also offer allotments for some residents and public green space for the wider community. All of the landscaped spaces have been designed to promote ecological biodiversity through the planting of wildflowers and diverse species.
The ingenuity and innovation of the Blackfriars development were recently recognised at Inside Housing’s 2021 Housing Development Awards where Blackfriars was named the UK’s best housing development (suburban and rural category).
More information on the planned development can be found within the planning documents on Rother Council’s Planning Portal.
The Outline Planning Approval can be found under Ref.No. RR/2019/604/P.
The Reserved Matters Planning Approval can be found under Ref.No RR/2020/2307/P.
On site activity
Construction on site will begin in Spring 2022 with Breheny Civil Engineering who are responsible for delivering a new road through the development which will connect Harrier Lane and The Spinney.
Much of the infrastructure work undertaken by Breheny has been made possible through the award of Homes England funding to the Council from the Government’s Housing Infrastructure Fund.
The construction of the road will be followed by the construction of the 200 homes which is expected to begin in Summer 2022, managed by Wates Residential.
It is anticipated that the construction of these homes will be completed in three phases, with the last of the properties reaching practical completion during 2024.
In preparation for the commencement of construction, the team has prepared a FAQ document on the development which can be accessed by clicking the button below.
Any initial queries regarding the Blackfriars scheme should be directed to Breheny Civil Engineering’s Site Agent, Harayshan Pirabaharan, on 07399528626. Calls to this number will be monitored and dealt with as quickly as possible.
