Heat pumps are electric heating systems that take heat from the outside environment and raise the temperature to a level that can heat your home. For every unit of electricity they use, they produce three units of heat. This makes them a very efficient alternative to a gas or oil boiler.

The Energy Saving Trust website has information on how heat pumps work and things to consider to decide if they might be right for your home: Heat pumps: everything you need to know – Energy Saving Trust

The Homewise energy tool gives you impartial, fact-checked advice so you can be clear about what you need to do to save energy at home. By completing a simple online survey, you will get a personalised home energy action plan tailored to your needs and budget in minutes. Click here to start your Homewise survey

Through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, you could get up to a £7,500 grant to cover part of the cost of replacing a fossil fuel heating system with a heat pump. Apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme here.

Before going ahead with a heat pump installation, it is recommended that you seek at least three quotes and fully research providers, checking reviews and references. We recommend you use an installer who is certified under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). MCS is the UK’s quality mark for small-scale renewables.

Make sure you have the right permissions in place before beginning installation, as some properties may need planning permission. Click here for more information on planning permission for domestic renewables.

Don’t forget to update your home insurance policy to ensure any changes to your home are covered.
