From the Leader – Friday, July 10

Work to transform an iconic seafront building has taken a leap forward with the installation of 144 solar panels.

The lightweight panels have been installed on the Auditorium roof of the Grade I listed De La Warr Pavilion and have the capacity to create around 20 per cent of the building’s annual electricity use.

We were delighted to be able to fund the solar panels through our Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) Climate Emergency Bonus Fund.

The solar panels are an example of the district council’s commitment to protect our environment during a climate emergency and the support we get from partners to achieve our ambitious target of becoming a carbon neutral district by 2030.

Our district has some amazing history, and you can see evidence of that in almost every village and town in Rother.

One of the most significant periods of history in our district is the Battle of Hastings in 1066 where the town of Battle now stands, when the Norman French army defeated an Anglo-Saxon army, marking the start of the Norman Conquest of England.

The Bayeux Tapestry is returning to Britain for the first time in almost 1,000 years, and I am delighted to say that residents of Rother and Hastings have access to exclusive priority booking for the once-in-a-generation exhibition at the British Museum.

Priority booking is available for tickets for September to December, with free tickets for everyone under 16 and priority tickets available for local school groups.

To book call the British Museum Box Office on 0207 323 8181 quoting your postcode. Tickets will have to be purchased using a card registered to a Rother or Hastings address.

Don’t worry, for those unable to secure tickets this time, a second release of priority tickets for January to July 2027 will be made available at a later date.

With the warmer weather, many residents are spending more time enjoying their garden.  So, it’s the perfect time to start thinking about signing up to Rother District Council’s Garden Waste Service for the period covering July 15, 2026, to July 14, 2027.

For those who already utilise the service, it’s just a case of renewing your subscription to continue the service without interruption.

For those who don’t currently use the service, you’ll need to set up an account and sign up to the service.  To renew or subscribe, visit Garden Waste Service 2026/27 – Rother District Council

The current subscription cost is £86 for the first bin and £70 for subsequent bins with a maximum of three bins per household.

Ends.
