Rother shows support for IDAHOBIT

An international day to highlight support for LGBTQIA+ people has been promoted at Rother District Council.

Councillors, staff and partners gathered at the town hall in Bexhill to show their support for the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT) which takes place annually on 17 May.
The global focus for 2026 is “At the heart of democracy”, a reminder that true democracy means fairness and freedom for everyone.

Cllr Gareth Delany, cabinet member for wellbeing, equality, age-friendly communities and community safety commented “It was wonderful to see members of our LGBTQIA+ community, staff and councillors come together on the steps of the town hall to mark IDAHOBIT. Events like this matter — they send a clear message that in Rother, everyone belongs and everyone is valued. I’m proud that the council is able to play a part in that.”

IDAHOBIT is a global moment of solidarity and action for LGBTQIA+ people. It brings together individuals, organisations, and governments to raise awareness of the discrimination still experienced by many LGBTQIA+ people and to advocate for laws and policies that protect LGBTQIA+ rights.

Experiences of biphobia, homophobia, and transphobia can appear and be experienced in very different ways and at the heart of IDAHOBIT is a collective commitment to dignity, safety, and equality for everyone.
