Building Maintenance Operative

Salary: £31,279 - £33,245 per annum - Starting salary dependent on qualifications and experience

Contract Type: Full Time - 37 hours per week

Contract Length: Permanent Contract

We are seeking an experienced general Building Maintenance Operative to join our small in-house Maintenance Team; our depot is based in Bexhill on Sea, but the role covers sites across the Rother District. The Building Maintenance team play a critical role within the Council and cover a wide variety of general maintenance duties.

We are looking for a strong team player who embraces change positively, with excellent time management skills and is prepared to work flexibly in accordance with the needs of the business. This will include being part of an out-of-hours rota to cover emergencies in the evenings and at weekends. The position will involve a lot of travelling to and from varied places of work and appointments.  A company vehicle, uniform and PPE will be provided for business use only.  A full driving licence is required of all applicants.

The ideal candidate will have a multi-skilled building trade background with a bias in civil works, fencing and other general building skills and be committed to further training and development.

We will also consider applicants who are practical, hands‑on, and eager to learn, even if they do not yet have experience across all trades. The post is appointed at a pay grade that reflects current skills and experience; however, there is clear opportunity for progression as additional skills are developed, demonstrated, and applied in the role. An enhanced DBS check will be required for this role.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Play a key role in keeping the district’s buildings, public spaces, and community facilities safe, functional, and well maintained
  • Deliver essential maintenance services through planned, preventative, and responsive works.
  • Carry out maintenance across a diverse range of Council‑owned assets, including: Council housing stock, parks and open spaces, street furniture, operational buildings, seafront facilities and project works.

Key Skills

 Multi‑skilled building maintenance experience across a range of trades in occupied and public environments.

  • Plumbing skills (non‑Gas Safe) including repairs, replacements, fault finding, and general maintenance.
  • Fencing works, including installation, repair, and replacement of boundary and security fencing.
  • Civil and groundworks experience, such as drainage, paving, minor concrete works, and external repairs.
  • Decorating skills, including internal and external preparation, painting, and finishing to a high standard.
  • Carpentry skills, including repairs and installation of doors, frames, fixtures, fittings, and general joinery.
  • General maintenance capability, able to diagnose issues and carry out effective repairs across council assets.
  • Plant and equipment operation, including the safe use of relevant tools, machinery, and mechanical plant.
  • Strong awareness of health & safety, safe systems of work, and risk management.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team, prioritising workloads and delivering quality outcome.
