Fairtrade promoted during Great Big Green Week

The Fairtrade Flag has been raised at the Council’s HQ to help highlight a week of national action to tackle climate change and protect the planet.

Rother District Council raised the flag at the Town Hall in Bexhill to show its support during Great Big Green Week (7th – 15th June).

Staff and Cllrs gathered to promote Fairtrade as one way people can act for a safer, greener future.

Lorna Ford, Rother District Council Chief Executive, who attended the flag raising event, said: “We want to encourage our residents and staff to consider Fairtrade when they do their shopping.

“Swapping the goods we buy to Fairtrade products at a local level can help to lift people out of poverty and actually save lives across the world.”

The Fairtrade initiative is just one example how ‘swapping’ is promoted during Great Big Green Week.

The national celebration of community action first started in 2021 and has grown quickly, with 600,000 taking part across the UK last year.

It encourages people to swap – for instance, swapping throwing away old items and instead giving them a new lease of life, perhaps by donating to charity; swapping skills with other organisations in your area, or even swapping an unloved area in your neighbourhood to one that attracts wildlife. The aim is to improve living standards, invest in communities and businesses, and protect the environment. For further details, go to: Home – Fairtrade
