Rother District Council would like to wish all residents and visitors a happy Pride Month. The Pride Progress flag will be flown outside Rother Town Hall on various days during June to make clear the council’s commitment to equity and inclusion.
Speaking on this, the Council’s Equality and Wellbeing portfolio holder Cllr Sam Coleman said:
“Pride month provides an important opportunity to recognise the contributions of the LGBTQ+ community to society, to reflect on the injustices of the past and the bravery of those who overcame it, to acknowledge the prejudices and challenges that the LGBTQ+ community continue to face to this day, and to commit to the advancement of greater intersectional justice, equity and liberation for all.
“Figures from the TUC suggest 52% of LGBTQ+ workers have faced bullying, harassment, or discrimination at work in the past five years. To be out and proud about who you are as an LGBTQ+ person still sadly carries risk and so supporting the LGBTQ+ community in being proud of who they are is very important.”
“We are committed to ensuring our staff and customers feel safe and welcome in an inclusive environment, not just during Pride but all year round”.
