Neurodiversity promoted thanks to council support

Neurodiversity awareness at Rother will be promoted thanks to support from district councillors.

At a recent full council meeting, the authority approved a notice of motion submitted by Cllr Jimmy Stanger to promote neurodiversity awareness and inclusion across all council activities.

The council – which has a duty under the Equality Act 2010 to make reasonable adjustments for neurodiverse individuals – has committed to involving neurodiverse people and representative organisations in future council decisions, in line with the principle “no decision about us without us”.

The motion ensures that information about neurodiversity will be integrated into future equality, diversity, and inclusion training.

Cllr Stanger, who has been appointed as the council’s official Neurodiversity Champion, said: “By formally embedding neurodiversity into our equality and inclusion framework, we’re reaffirming our dedication to creating a council that truly serves everyone.

“Our community is made richer by the unique perspectives of neurodiverse individuals, and these commitments mark the beginning of a more inclusive era in Rother. We will continue to listen, adapt, and learn—ensuring every voice is heard.”

The council will now engage with local neurodiverse groups to co-develop consultation practices, services, and public communications. All council staff will receive enhanced training on neurodiversity, ensuring awareness and understanding across teams.

The authority intends to deliver a public update later this year, highlighting progress and next steps.

Ends.
