PEOPLE in Rother are being urged to take part in a consultation that will help shape the future of the district up to 2042.
Rother District Council Leader Doug Oliver is encouraging residents, businesses, community groups and partner organisations to give their views on the latest draft Local Plan.
The Plan sets out where new homes, jobs and infrastructure could be delivered whilst protecting the qualities that make Rother a special place to live, work and visit.
Cllr Oliver says the district faces increasingly high housing targets set by central government and must respond to these through the Local Plan process.
He said: “The Local Plan is of critical importance to the future of Rother, and I urge everyone to give their views in the consultation.
“Whilst responding to government housing targets requires difficult decisions, an up-to-date Local Plan is the best way to retain local control, protect our countryside and secure the infrastructure our communities need.”
Cllr Oliver added: “Without a Local Plan, Rother would be very vulnerable to speculative development, and planning decisions could instead be made by the government.”
People can view the draft Local Plan and submit their comments by visiting www.rother.gov.uk/draftlocalplan. The consultation will be open until Tuesday 24 November 2026.
The latest draft Plan has been shaped by feedback received during previous rounds of consultation, with thousands of comments helping to inform the process so far. The Plan includes proposals for:
- affordable housing,
- climate-friendly development,
- stronger protection for nature and the environment, and
- investment in infrastructure to support local communities.
“Whether you’re a resident, business owner, community group or partner organisation, your views matter,” said Cllr Oliver. “You can help ensure the final Plan reflects the needs and aspirations of our district.”
