With county council elections back on, residents not already registered to have their say have until midnight on Monday, April 20, to make sure they can have their say.
It’s so important that everyone has the ability to exercise their democratic right and elect the person they want to represent them but there will still be many residents across Rother who are not registered to vote.
There could be any number of reasons people are not registered to vote – they may have recently moved, be a student living outside the district, or may have missed the annual canvass.
If you haven’t already registered to vote, I would urge to you do so by visiting www.gov.uk/register-to-vote before the April 20th deadline.
Residents with questions about their registration status can contact the council’s electoral services team at elections@rother.gov.uk.
Once registered you have a range of options on how to cast your ballot – you can vote in person, by post are appoint someone you trust to vote on your behalf, known as a proxy vote.
It’s now all hands to the pump at the town hall to arrange the delivery of ballot papers, polling stations and election counts, after Government reinstated the delayed elections.
Our work to secure a future for a number of community assets around the district continues.
Recreations grounds, allotments and playgrounds could be among 71 community assets transferred to town and parish councils in a bid to give local communities greater control over their own facilities and ease the financial pressure on Rother District Council
We received a number of expressions of interest and business cases for these assets and have asked our Head of Housing and Strategic Assets to take the transfers forward.
With the financial pressures faced by councils and the impending reorganisation of local government it’s important we progress these transfers and allow communities to start planning for their future use.
At our recent Cabinet meeting, we were able to agree funding deals for two very worthwhile causes. We have been able to achieve this in spite of the financial pressures we face and in recognition of the benefit their bring to residents across the district.
We will enter into a new agreement with the highly valued Rother Voluntary Action, which does so much for our communities. The agreement comes with £38,000 for 2026/27 and £34,200 for 2027/28, as well as a further £30,000 for 2026/27 and 2027/28 to support the delivery of the Rother Age Friendly Network.
We also agreed funding for 1066 Country Marketing which does a sterling job in promoting Rother businesses to visitors. Grants of £50,000 for 2026/27 and £45,000 for 2027/28, were agreed and we also agreed to continue to support 1066 Marketing with a project officer and management support.
Funding for both for 207/28 will be reviewed next year when we have a better understanding of the council’s financial situation.
The project is essential for maximising the tourism industry in Rother which has a significant impact on our economy across the district.
Ends.
