Council praise for regeneration refurb

Refurbishment work completed earlier this summer at a regeneration project in Bexhill has been praised by the District Council.

Flatland Projects has successfully finished a major refurbishment at Beeching Road Studios, to enhance its facilities for artists and the wider local community.

The work – supported by Levelling Up Partnership funding from the Government – included improvements to the gallery, offices, and a new artist research centre. The refurbishment began in the autumn of last year and cost £124,000.

The completion of the work means that Flatland Projects can increase its offering as a place of skills growth for young artists, and accessibility to unique art exhibitions for the public, helping to boost Bexhill as a place increasingly recognised for artist-led cultural infrastructure and coastal regeneration.

Councillor Christine Bayliss, portfolio holder for regeneration at the Council, said: “In 2018, the Council purchased the freehold on six industrial units at Beeching Road Industrial Estate in Bexhill.

“Grant funding was secured to re-purpose the buildings to provide workspaces to accommodate and develop creative sector businesses. The studios opened in 2022, and steady progress has been made since then.

“The investment for this recent refurbishment carried out by Flatlands is an example of that progress and underlines the commitment of all partners to the cultural sector in Rother.”

Flatland Projects led the inaugural Bexhill Art Weekender, partnering with eight cultural organisations across the town which took place on 13 and 14 September 2025.
