Council addresses Town Hall Renaissance Project claims

Some information currently being circulated on social media about the Bexhill Town Hall Renaissance Project is not a true reflection of all issues facing the council.

That’s the view of Rother District Council as it addresses claims about how the project has been managed.

The Town Hall plans were first drawn up in 2019 prior to the Covid pandemic but were subsequently refused by planning committee in 2022. The building was Grade II listed in November 2022, which causes new constraints on what it is possible to develop on the town hall site.

Over the last few years, the post-covid world is a different place where previous demand for office space and other alternative uses have reduced, making any business case for full redevelopment hard to justify.

The forthcoming local government reorganisation makes service delivery and future office space requirements uncertain – and it would not be prudent to spend millions on developing the site for which there is no longer a demonstrable need.

The council now intends to look at proposals that include disposal of part of the site for potential housing.
