A clean‑up operation is continuing on a number of local beaches following the discovery of debris and the remains of a shipping container along the Rother coastline.
Council coastal officers and partner agencies have been working throughout the week to safely remove the material – such as insulating foam – and monitor the situation as further items continue to be reported.
Latest sightings include loose onions and netted garlic washing ashore – and so dog owners are being warned to keep their pets away from affected areas and to keep their dogs on leads when they are on the beach.
Other coastal areas in East Sussex have also been affected, and Rother District Council is working closely with district, borough and county colleagues, alongside the relevant emergency and environmental agencies, to ensure the beaches are made safe as quickly as possible.
Those wishing to assist in the clean-up effort are asked to follow the guidance below to ensure safety and effective waste recovery:
- Do not empty any liquids found inside containers or packaging.
- Keep food waste separate from other waste wherever possible.
- Leave collected items next to the nearest RDC litter bin for collection.
- You can report any debris or shipping container waste to our coastal team via email at: coastal@rother.gov.uk.
- Any sightings of shipping containers should be reported to Solent Coastguard on 0344 382 0560.
Those visiting the coastline are reminded of the following safety precautions:
- Check tide times before heading out: www.tidetimes.org.uk
- Do not enter the water to retrieve floating items – only collect debris safely accessible from the shore.
- Keep up to date with weather warnings: www.weather.metoffice.gov.uk
- Wear appropriate gloves and sturdy footwear and do not try to move heavy or sharp items.
