These are quiet beaches situated between the cliffs at Fairlight Cove, Hastings and the expanse of flat sandy beach at Camber. They are shingle beaches in a quiet location away from traffic. Winchelsea beach is adjacent to an inshore area famous for its bird life, with the benefit of a sea wall, it is ideal for casual walks or playing on the beach. Pett Level beach is next to the cliffs and has access to the petrified forest at low tide.

These beaches are unsupervised; the closest lifeguarded beach is in Camber or Hastings.  Speak to our Coastal Team for further information on 01797 225207 or by emailing

In the event of an emergency please dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

There is some safety information you should be aware of when visiting any of our beaches:

  • Beware of fast incoming tides – check the tide times

  • Beware of sandbars – don’t get cut off by the tide

  • Always wear clothing designed for swimming – when wet, normal clothes can cause you to sink!

  • Beware of soft sand and mud exposed at low tide

  • Do not dig deep holes or tunnels in the sand

  • Beware of rocks and underwater obstructions

  • Stay away from groynes and outfall pipes

  • Weeverfish can sting, wear suitable footwear when paddling at low tide

  • Alcohol and swimming don’t mix

  • Safety signs are located along the foreshore, make sure you read the information and familiarise yourself with the environment.

  • This is an unmanned beach.  Swim at your own risk.  Your closest lifeguarded beach is Camber Sands.

Visiting with children

We recommend families visit Camber or Hastings beach where lifeguards are present.

Remember, your children are your responsibility. Please keep them in your sight and do not let them enter the water alone if they can’t swim or have limited swimming ability.
