If noise is ongoing, persistent, and within our remit, it may be considered a statutory nuisance and can be investigated by Environmental Health.

What We Can Investigate

We can only investigate repeated noise problems that affect residents.

Short‑lived or one‑off events — such as a firework display — are not considered a statutory nuisance and do not warrant action from Environmental Health.

Before Making a Report

  1. Speak to the person responsible. They may not be aware of the issue.
  2. If this is not possible or unsuccessful, consider writing to them.
  3. If the issue continues, you can contact our free mediation service for help communicating with your neighbour. Mediation Plus Dispute Resolution Services in Sussex. Before contacting them please read the Mediation Plus privacy policy. You can also phone Mediation Plus on 01424 446808 01323 442781

If You Are a Tenant

If you or your neighbour are private renters or social housing tenants, you should report the issue to your landlord before contacting the Council.

Making a Noise Complaint to the Council

  • We cannot process anonymous complaints.
  • You must provide an accurate address or location where the noise is coming from.
  • If you are unsure of the source, please carry out further checks before submitting a report.
  • Do not list your own address as the noise source — the complaint cannot be accepted.
