83% of Rother falls within the High Weald National Landscape (formally High Weald AONB) and a further 7% is protected by national/international conservation designations. High woodland coverage, with over 15% of the district being ancient woodland, means Rother has higher than average levels of carbon being stored (or sequestered). Whilst this is very positive, the UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world, and the protection and restoration of habitats are required at scale to tackle the nature emergency, address climate impacts and bring broader benefits to people.
