As part of the council’s commitment to help tackle climate change and reduce carbon emissions, Carbon Literacy workshops are regularly offered to our officers and elected members.

Using resources developed for local authorities by the Carbon Literacy Project, the training provides an awareness of the carbon dioxide costs and impacts of activities globally, across the UK and locally to Rother. On completing the training, to become accredited as Carbon Literate, officers must submit an evidence form for review by the Carbon Literacy Project and commit to at least two pledges that will contribute to a reduction in emissions on an individual, community or organisational basis.

In July 2024, the Council was awarded the status of a Bronze Level Carbon Literate Organisation (CLO) by the Carbon Literacy Project in recognition of its commitment to genuine low-carbon action and the building of a low-carbon future through its delivery and plans for future Carbon Literacy Training. We then achieved Silver Level CLO, with a third of officers accredited as Carbon Literate, in September 2025.

We have a target to raise accreditation to 60% to become a Gold Level CLO in 2026.
