Could you be the next Rother District Councillor?

Residents interested in shaping the future of their communities in Rother are being invited to find out more about becoming a councillor at a special pre-election event.

Following an announcement that Local Government Reorganisation in East Sussex is paused and under review, local elections scheduled for May 2027 are going ahead using the current district and borough council boundaries.

As a result, all 38 seats on Rother District Council will be contested at the elections on Thursday 6 May 2027.

To help prospective candidates learn more about the role, Rother District Council is holding an online pre-election event on Tuesday 24 November 2026 at 6pm via Microsoft Teams.

Councillors play a vital role in representing local people, helping to shape council policies and decisions, and acting as champions for their communities. The event will provide an insight into what it means to be a district councillor and the opportunity to make a real difference to the places where people live and work.

Councillor Gareth Delany, Chair of the Member Development Task Group at Rother District Council, said: “One of the best ways of influencing decisions about your community and our district is to become a District Councillor.

“Those attending our pre-election event will learn about the support, training and development opportunities available to councillors elected to the Council, helping them carry out their responsibilities as community leaders.

“The session will also provide an overview of the wide range of services delivered by the Council and the challenges and opportunities facing the authority over the coming years.”

The event will also provide an opportunity to hear directly from current councillors and senior officers about their experiences and the important role councillors play in serving local communities.

The session is open to anyone considering standing for election in May 2027, regardless of background or experience. Whether you are already involved in community activities or are simply passionate about making a positive difference in your area, the session will provide valuable information about what is involved in becoming a councillor.

Anyone wishing to attend should reserve a place by emailing democraticservices@rother.gov.uk  no later than Friday 20 November 2026.

The event will be recorded and made available on the council’s website for those who are unable to attend live.
