Council Tax Scam Warning

We are aware that some residents have received fraudulent emails or text messages about council tax. The messages may use the council’s name or logo and include a link to a fake website designed to obtain a payment or steal personal and banking information.

If you receive one of these messages:

  • Do not click any links or open attachments.
  • Do not reply or provide personal, council tax, payment, or banking details.
  • Do not make a payment using the link or contact details in the message.
  • Check your council tax account or contact the council using the details on your bill or the official council website.
  • Report the message through the appropriate official reporting service, then delete it.

If you have already clicked a link, made a payment, or shared personal or banking information, contact your bank immediately using the number on the back of your card or another trusted source. Change any password you disclosed and report the incident to the relevant authorities.

A council logo or familiar branding does not prove that a message is genuine. If you are unsure, stop and verify the request independently before taking any action.
