Rother highlights Holocaust Memorial Day 2026

Rother District Council is highlighting Holocaust Memorial Day (Tuesday 27 January), which marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.

The Day is aimed at remembering the six million Jewish people who died in the Holocaust – the Nazi campaign to erase Europe’s Jewish population, and the victims of every genocide.

This year’s theme is ‘Bridging Generations’ and is a reminder that the responsibility of remembrance doesn’t end with the survivors. It lives on through their children, their grandchildren and through everyone.

Holocaust Memorial Day is an opportunity to remember other groups murdered under Nazi persecution and subsequent genocides in countries all over the world.

Each year across the UK, Holocaust Memorial Day brings people together to learn more about the past, empathise more with people today, and work to build a better future. It’s a day of commemoration and action, when people can challenge attitudes and behaviours to build a better future together.
