Powering and heating the 42,000 homes in Rother accounts for a third of the district’s greenhouse gas emissions. Around a third of Rother’s homes are heated by oil, or LPG, with the majority of the rest heated by gas. These fossil fuels are high emitters of greenhouse gases, and using them leaves residents more susceptible to volatile energy prices. Almost all homes require some degree of modification, or retrofitting, to reach net zero by the UK’s target of 2050, and with 73% of Rother’s homes owner-occupied, homeowners are key in tackling our domestic emissions.
Making our homes more energy efficient by using low-energy appliances, reducing heat-loss through measures such as insulation and draft proofing, and adapting our behaviours to use less energy and water, helps to lower emissions and save money on energy bills.
