Cooden and Normans Bay beaches are both rural beaches with long and gently sloping shingle. They are located to the west of Bexhill and provide a secluded getaway, where you can enjoy a natural and quieter beach.

These beaches are unsupervised; the closest lifeguarded beach is located at Bexhill central, by the De la Warr Pavilion during July and August. Speak to our Coastal Team for further information on 01424221407 or by emailing bexhillcoastaloffice@rother.gov.uk .

In the event of an emergency please dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

There is some safety information you should be aware of when visiting any of our beaches:

  • Beware of fast incoming tides – check the tide times using the link at the end of the page

  • Beware of sandbars – don’t get cut off by the tide

  • Always wear clothing designed for swimming – when wet, normal clothes can cause you to sink!

  • Beware of soft sand and mud exposed at low tide

  • Do not dig deep holes or tunnels in the sand

  • Beware of rocks and underwater obstructions

  • Stay away from groynes and outfall pipes

  • Weeverfish can sting, wear suitable footwear when paddling at low tide

  • Alcohol and swimming don’t mix

  • Safety signs are located along the foreshore, make sure you read the information and familiarise yourself with the environment.

  • Do not swim if the red flags are flying

  • Do not use inflatables when the orange flag is flying

Know your flags

Do not enter the water when the red flags are flying.

Offshore winds will blow you out to sea – do not use inflatables when the orange flag or sock is flying.

Visiting with children

We recommend families visit Bexhill beach where lifeguards are present in July and August.

Remember, your children are your responsibility. Please keep them in your sight and do not let them enter the water alone if they can’t swim or have limited swimming ability.

Barbeques

Barbeques are permitted on Bexhill and Cooden beaches.  However, we would ask that you follow the guidance below:

  • Do not leave lit or warm barbeques unattended
  • Remove all waste and ash from the beach
  • Do not place warm or lit barbeques into waste bins
  • Ensure all barbeques are raised off the stones and sand
  • Ensure the area beneath the barbeque is cool before leaving the area unattended – this can be done by dousing the area with cold water
  • Permission for large numbers (10+) of people should be sought from the Neighbourhood Services Office in advance on 01424 787531.
