Located behind the Bexhill Museum, just a short walk from the seafront and town centre, Egerton Park offers a range of facilities including a popular children's play area, outdoor tennis courts and an outdoor fitness area; the adiZone. The Park is also home to both indoor and outdoor bowling clubs, Bexhill Tennis Club and Egerton Park Family Learning Centre. | Created during the late 1800's by local developer John Webb, the park is one of the town's best-loved features. Originally the land was a marshy area prone to flooding but the creation of the lakes helped to drain the land and its surrounds. During the excavation of the boating lake the fossilised bone of a dinosaur and the remains of an ancient boat were discovered. Up until the mid 20th century, the park was one of the town's main centres for entertainment, relaxation and recreation with sporting events, theatrical and musical performances being held on a regular basis. This use of the park dwindled, but recently the Friends of Egerton Park, the Children's Centre and Churches Together in Bexhill have held to a number of events which it is hoped will be a step towards reinstating the park's status as a venue for cultural events and activity. | |
 | Over its history, the park has seen a number of changes including the introduction and loss of features such as the Egerton Park theatre, bandstand and swimming baths. In 2006, the Council was awarded a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to begin the process of planning for the park's regeneration. Consultation and research informed the development of an outline master-plan for the park. Although an application for Lottery funding to further develop and implement the proposals was unsuccessful, the Council remains committed to refurbishing and enhancing the park and has committed c£1M to this end. Work is now underway in the park to implement a package of improvements including repairs to the lake edges completed in 2011 and a new refreshment kiosk and children's play-zone to be constructed in 2012. | What is happening in Egerton Park this month?
