Housing Needs

The Housing Needs Section assesses applications from clients with a housing need in accordance with the Housing Act 1996 Parts VI and VII (Homelessness), as amended by the Homelessness Act 2002.

The Housing Needs Section provides all aspects of housing advice to any person requiring it.

Structure

The Housing Needs Manager is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Section and ensures that the service provided adheres to the prevailing legislation and policy framework.

The Housing Needs Section has five Housing Needs Officers.

The Housing Needs Section are also responsible for nominating applicants from the Council's Housing Register to the Registered Social Landlord (Housing Association) partners. Housing Needs Officers assess people who apply to the Council under the homeless persons legislation.

The Housing Needs Officers are responsible for registering all the Housing Register applications and homeless applications onto the Council's computerised IBS system. The Housing Support Officer provides administrative support to the Housing Needs Team.

Housing Register

Applicants apply to join the Housing Register and are assessed on a priority need basis under the council's points based Allocations Scheme.

The Housing Needs Officers or Registered Social Landlord will visit applicants nominated for housing to check their current situation. The purpose of the visit is to ensure they have the priority for housing they stated on their application form. If they are found not to have provided correct information their nomination will be withdrawn and they will be re-assessed. Visits are usually carried out by appointment only.
