Disability Confident

The Council has attained Disability Confident Employer status and has completed all the relevant assessments to retain this status for 3 years. This is a government scheme that replaced the 2 Ticks scheme in 2016 and is designed to encourage employers to recruit and retain disabled people and those with health conditions. The Council is on Level 2 of 3 available for employers. This means that the Department for Work and Pensions has accredited Rother District Council and we can display the identity on our adverts for job vacancies. The scheme is voluntary and requires self-assessment of the Council’s business against a set of statements that are grouped into 2 key areas:

1.Getting the right people for your business
2.Keeping and developing your people

The Council also has to take all of the core actions to be a Disability Confident Employer as well as offer at least 1 activity to cover the 2 key areas mentioned above.

Purple Tuesday

On the 12th November 2019 the Council will be participating in the Purple Tuesday event. This day is a national event organised by the charity Purple with a number of high-profile organisations such as Barclays and Sainsbury’s forming a working group looking at the way businesses and companies provide services as well as changing the customer experience for disabled people and their families. Last year’s event focused on retail, following the success of this event, it has now spread around the world and many organisations around the UK including local authorities, trade bodies, charities and not-for-profit organisations are signing up, with an advisory group also being formed to ensure disabled customers’ needs are fully understood.

Participating organisations will make public commitments (a minimum of one new activity or initiative) to ensure sustainable changes are made. Our commitment  is to ‘Conduct an on-site accessibility audit of our physical space and make plans for improvement and provide disability training opportunities for front line staff’.
