Residents and organisations in Battle are invited to join a community tree planting day at Coronation Gardens Rec, Battle, TN33 0GD on Tuesday 3rd December 2024 between 09.30 am and 4.30 pm. Volunteers can attend for the whole day, or for as little as an hour or two.
Please register your interest and preferred time slot by completing this online form: Battle Tree Planting Day registration form. If you are booking on behalf of a group, please state how many volunteers will be joining you in the comments and questions box.
The community tree planting day is being hosted jointly by Rother District Council and Battle Town Council, with support from Southern Housing. It will involve the planting of a micro wood and a community orchard, both funded by Defra’s Coronation Living Heritage Fund, which aims to connect communities with nature and improve the local environment to mark the coronation of King Charles III.
All tree planting volunteers are asked to:
- wear suitable clothing for what will be a cold, damp and muddy environment
- wear suitable footwear (wellies or sturdy boots) and gloves (preferably gardening gloves)
- bring a drink and your own lunch if required. Light snacks will be provided.
- always follow the directions of event staff whilst on site and act in a safe and considerate manner.
Please note there are no toilets on the rec. The closest public toilets are at Battle Train Station (around a 13-minute walk).
Please walk, use public transport or car share to the site where possible to reduce traffic. Nearby on-street parking is free but limited. If you do drive, please park sensibly and sensitively to local residents.
A micro wood involves densely planting a variety of native tree and shrub saplings on an area around the size of a tennis court. This replicates the natural process of forest regeneration, promotes fast growth, increases resilience and reduces the need for ongoing maintenance.
The community orchard will involve planting a variety of fruit trees such as apples, plums, pears, cherries, medlar and mulberry. Once established, residents and visitors to the rec will be welcome to access the fruit.
