About the Estates Department
The Estates Department is responsible for managing a diverse portfolio of assets across the district. This includes a significant number of business and industrial units, as well as a variety of unique properties such as the historic Landgate in Rye, bowling greens, the Colonnade in Bexhill, scout huts, beachfronts, and commercial premises including Sainsbury’s and Jempson’s.
Our team undertakes a broad range of landlord and tenant responsibilities, from routine estate management to identifying opportunities for enhancement, development, and improvement. We are committed to maximising both community value and financial return and operate at a fast pace with a wide-ranging workload.
This position includes a retention payment, which is subject to annual review.
Key Responsibilities
The role will involve, but is not limited to:
- General estate management of the Council’s land and property assets
- Negotiating and delivering new lettings
- Conducting rent reviews, lease renewals, and managing licences and easements
- Supporting compliance monitoring
- Liaising with tenants and stakeholders
- Undertaking block studies and preparing business cases
Essential Skills and Experience
- Membership of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) is desirable; relevant professional experience is essential
- Proven experience in lease negotiation
- Experience in development appraisal is advantageous but not essential
Location and Working Arrangements
This is a hands-on role requiring regular travel across the district, particularly in Bexhill-on-Sea, Battle, and Rye. The role is based at the Town Hall in Bexhill-on-Sea, with flexible and mobile working arrangements essential due to the nature of the work.
