Filming in Rother
1066 Country Film Office is collaboration between Hastings Borough and Rother District Councils and combines the areas of:
Camber, Winchelsea Beach, Pett, Icklesham, Fairlight, Rye, Beckley
Battle, Robertsbridge, Bodiam
Hastings, St. Leonards
Beautiful countryside and coastal scenes are in abundance and you will be spoilt for choice.
The sandy beaches of Camber, a Grade 1 listed promenade in Bexhill, the historic backdrop, and back story, of Battle, the ancestral Cinque port of Rye and the rolling hills and lush woodland of rural Rother. It's pretty clear why many people choose to settle down in Rother, why so many visit the area, and why they either come back year after year, or in some cases never leave!
Reading the list of rich locations and features, plus many more too numerous to mention here and it is also no surprise that a long line of film shoots, TV productions, advertisements and photographers have chosen the area to provide the backdrop for their features.
In the last 12 months alone, numerous permits have been granted to various film and photography productions including the BBC documentary series, Coast. The production company responsible for Who Do You Think You Are?, visited the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill; Fashion shoots for Vogue, Bella and the F.T (!) on Camber Sands unspoiled views of sandy beach and sea; and several advertisements, including a TV channel launch promo featuring over 100 extras.
Looking back to past productions that have centred on the picturesque surroundings found in the district, and we find that 1066 Country is a perfect setting for a plethora of features; providing the backdrop for the Dunkirk landings, and for the historic maritime tale of Yellowbeard. The De La Warr Pavilion contributed to a major short film project by the artist Daria Martin. Poirot even managed to investigate a case in Rye in 1992!
The application for permits is relatively straightforward, and is handled all the way through the 1066 Country Film Office. Officers are happy to advise on the terms of filming, the permits required and insurances needed, whilst they also ensure that the production companies are welcomed and that they arrive, film and leave with the fond and positive memories that Rother and all it has to offer can give.
