Council and Democracy

Rother District Council is one of five District and Borough Councils within the County of East Sussex. It consists of thirty two Parishes served by 31 Parish and Town Councils and one Parish meeting. (see Parish / Town Councils under 'Related Pages')

The District is served by 38 Councillors and elections of the Council are held every four years (the last District election was held in May 2011).

The Council welcomes public participation in its decision-making and is keen to continue to improve upon its engagement with the various communities it serves.

The Council operates a Cabinet form of decision-making structure. The Cabinet consists of the Leader of the Council and seven other Councillors, who are each responsible for a specific portfolio. There are also two Regulatory Committees (the Planning Committee and the Licensing and General Purposes Committee)  and two Overview and Scrutiny Committees .  The Council also has a Standards Committee which includes three independent members of the public and three representatives of Town and Parish Councils within the District. This Committee ensures that the Councillors comply with strict codes of conduct.

Details of the responsibility of each of these Committees and full Council can be found by following the link under "Related Pages" to "Committees".

Council meetings are normally open to the public and every effort is made to ensure that the need to consider matters behind closed doors, in confidential session, is kept to a minimum. Members of the public may also ask questions at full Council meetings and details of how to do this can be found by following the link to the right under "Related Pages" to the Public Question Time Scheme.

All Committee agendas, minutes and reports are available on the Council's website and at all its main offices, again only with the exception of confidential items (Agendas are published five clear working days before the meeting and, in most cases, minutes are available a week after the meeting). The Council is keen to increase attendance of the public at its meetings and you can help us by giving us your views on any meetings of the Council that you have attended by completing and returning the questionnaire which can be found on the right hand side column of this page under "Related Downloads".

The Councillors work closely with the Council's officers and its partner organisations in both the public and voluntary sector, to deliver services to the residents of the area at the highest possible standard.
