Camber Visitor Management Initiative

The Camber Visitor Management Initiative sets out range of initiatives aimed at improving and enhancing Camber's potential as a visitor destination and as a place to live.

Camber is a coastal village set in a distinctive and outstanding landscape. With its beautiful sandy beach adjoining the English Channel, the extensive Romney Marsh to the north east and the impressive sand dunes Camber has become one of the most popular natural seaside resorts on the south coast. Its outstanding natural environment is recognised and protected through regulation.

However there is room for improvement - particularly in terms of the range and quality of product and services provided.

In 2004 Tourism South East, Camber Parish Council, Rother District Council and East Sussex County Council commissioned Arup associates to undertake research & consultation to formulate a strategy to extend the tourism season, expand the tourism offer, improve the visitor experience and improve the quality of life for local Camber residents. The overall vision for the initiative is to create a vibrant, high quality destination integrated with the quality of life experience of the natural resources of the dunes and beach.

A range of proposed actions were developed with an understanding that they need to address the issue of sustainability.

The Camber Visitor Management Initiative (VMI) report was published in December 2004 and subsequently adopted by the Council as one of its Corporate Priorities.

A key element to the VMI is the creation of a focal point for the village at the Central Car Park, which provides level access to the beach in a central position and which offers the opportunity for improved facilities and services through redevelopment.

Note:Rother District Council and the City of Oostende have been awarded a grant by a European Union (EU) programme called INTERREG C21p to fund improvements to parks and other open spaces. See 21st Century Parks web page for full details.
