Genetically Modified (GM) Crops
Rother District Council's Motion on Genetically Modified (GM) Crops This Council recognises that, given the significant public concern about the potential effects of growing Genetically Modified (GM) crops on the environment and public health (public GM debate "GM Nation?"), that: - there is still much scientific debate about the safety of GM.
- the commercial growing of GM crops has considerable legal, economic, social and ethical issues that have yet to be assessed.
The Council therefore declares that this District will, so far as is possible, be kept free of GM crops. To this end: - it will make its best endeavours so that no GM crops are grown on land over which it has direct control;
- in so far as lies within its power, it will resist the growing of GM crops within Rother until such time as public concern has been adequately addressed;
- if and when notified of any prospective GMO marketing consent, it will make the Council's objections known to the relevant authorities, requesting that the Rother area be exempted from any consent that might be given.
