Taxi and Private Hire Licensing

Taxis, (officially called hackney carriages) or private hire vehicles, drivers and operators are licensed by the Council to ensure the safety of passengers. The majority of licences are issued annually.

The trade is governed by various Acts of Parliament, in addition to local conditions set by this Council.

For an explanation of the byelaws and taxi licensing system please read the leaflet.

If you would like to become a new licensed driver you should know that there are several checks which you will have to pass. You will have to consent to an enhanced Criminal Record Bureau check, a DVLA check, medical check by your own family GP, a driving test by the DSA and a local knowledge test. Please read the guidance which includes the fees payable.

All complaints about taxis, drivers and operators are investigated. If you would like to make a complaint please telephone the taxi licensing officer. All complaints are treated confidentially, but you are asked to leave your full details with us. If you have a query on charges, please view the fare card.

For more information, or to apply to for a first licence, please e-mail taxis@rother.gov.uk and we will e-mail you the form.

Tel: 01424 787528 or e-mail: taxis@rother.gov.uk
