East Sussex Sustainable Business Partnership and betre

Opportunity for businesses to receive free advice to reduce energy, water and waste costs.

East Sussex betre (business excellence through resource efficiency) provides FREE practical advice to local small businesses on reducing waste, energy and water use. Our business users reap the benefits of reduced utility costs and tangible environmental improvements.

Since 2003, the East Sussex betre project has:

- Helped local businesses to save over £1.3 million

- Provided training, environmental audits and helpline services to over 900 businesses

- Diverted from local landfills enough waste to fill 236 ten tonne dumper trucks per year

- Saved enough energy to drive a small car over 8 million miles per year

- Cut enough CO2 emissions to fill 2,800 Boeing 767s per year

- Saved enough water to fill 16 Olympic-sized swimming pools each year

The project, run in partnership with Rother District Council, has recently received a prestigious national Green Apple Award for these outstanding achievements.

Businesses involved in betre are also gaining external recognition. Pestalozzi International Village Trust were shortlisted for a SEEDA Sustainable Business Award.

Scott Lavocah, Rother District Council's Policy Officer for Sustainable Development said, "the 'business excellence through resource efficiency' (betre) scheme is invaluable in providing a focus and direction for environmental and cost saving initiatives. The opportunity to network with other business is also particularly useful and the ongoing practical support offered by the betre project team will help ensure that businesses achieve their goals". I have been impressed with the benefits that businesses have obtained from taking part in the previous betre project and I firmly believe that businesses in Rother district will be able to gain similar measurable benefits from the current project, including reduced costs and improved environmental performance".

The betre project helped Pestalozzi to identify potential savings of up to £12,000 per year on their energy bills, and provided a Green Action Award to help improve heating controls, which cut gas use by 34% and saved £2,600 per year.
