Street Name and Numbering (SNN) Existing Properties

The naming of streets and numbering of properties in the Rother District is a statutory function of the Council. All new developments or re-developments need to be named and numbered.

House Name Changes
To name or to change the name of your house, you must be the owner of the property (i.e NOT the tenant)

A property name will not be formally changed where the property is in the process of being purchased. Only when contracts are exchanged can a name change request be accepted.

You must state the full current address of the property including the postcode, the proposed new name and the Council Tax account number (as a cross-check to ensure we are talking about the right property).  Please note there is no guarantee that your proposed house name will be accepted because the name has to comply with certain criteria, for instance we need to ensure that there are no similar names within that geographic area. For more information, the Rother District Council's Street Naming and Numbering Policy can be found to the right of this page.

Postcode Allocation
The purpose of a postcode is to assist Royal Mail in their own working processes. Rother District Council have a good working relationship with Royal Mail but are not responsible for postcode allocations, this is the responsibility of Royal Mail.  Royal Mail do not issue a postcode for a new street unless requested to do so by the Council.  If you have any questions regarding this, please contact your local Royal Mail office.

Payments
Payments can be made with a debit or credit card over the telephone by contacting our Customer Service Team on 01424 787000.  They will take your details and will complete a request form on your behalf.  A statement of declaration will be read to you which you will need to agree to before we can process your application. Alternatively you can pay by cheque.  To do this please print and complete the SNN Form for Legal Owners  on the right of this page and return it to:
