Rubbish and Recycling - Latest News. Adverse Weather.
ADVERSE WEATHER By the end of Monday 13th, virtually all collections were back to normal. A small number of minor roads and tracks may still present problems from ice, but the crews will do their best and try to complete works as quickly as possible. Our contractor Biffa has to be thanked for the way it approached the difficult working conditions and on the quality of the service received during this period. There has been very little adverse comment and many residents have even contacted us to express their thanks and surprise that the job has been done. | End Jan 2012 - The new WASTE to ENERGY plant at Newhaven is now commissioned and running well. For much of the waste we can't recycle, this will prove a superb way of recovering Electricity from Waste Click on the picture! |

COLLECTIONS BACK TO NORMAL DAYS Week starting Monday 9th Jan 2012 - all collections return to regular day, and garden/card wheelie bin collections re-start. If you're unsure of what's collected this week, please visit When's my Bin Day
| Plastic - what to recycle? No more searching for symbols! If it's a bottle shape, recycle it, please. Our reprocessors can only take bottle shaped plastics; the market for other plastics just isn't there in the UK for the time being. |
Tetrapak - it's special! Drinks cartons must not be recycled with cardboard - they're made from a unique composite mix of card, plastic and foil, and need special recycling. We have bins devoted to these at: - Little Common
- Ravenside
- Northiam
- Burwash
- Battle (Market)

Electrical Waste - an assurance. Monday 16th May 2011 Panorama on BBC carried a report about some councils waste being illegally exported. Please be assured that we, our disposal partners ESCC and their contractor Veolia send all electrical items to authorised recovery companies in the UK. Coming Soon - at several of our mini recycling sites you'll soon see new bins where you can place old small electrical appliances. These will be taken by our contractor and sent to approved recovery facilities in the UK.
Your collection day remains fixed. We collect on all Bank Holidays (except Christmas & New Year) Please remember to put your container out as normal. If you're not sure of your normal day, click this link - When's my Bin Day
Our beverage/drinks carton recycling at - Northiam,
- Burwash

is provided by ACE UK | | They have changed their collection contractor, and from April 2011, the small wheeled bins are replaced with large metal ones. The emptying is done by a large vacuum cleaner

We and our contractor, Verdant (now Biffa), are very happy to accept your warm praise and gratitude for the way we've organised and undertaken Recycling and Rubbish collections in spite of the extremes of weather we experienced at the beginning of December and just before Christmas. But.........the citizens of Rother are the most important element in this success; your dedication to recycling, your co-operation, your good will and good humour are essential to our joint success. THANK YOU! |
Many of you have sent very kind notes of thanks and appreciation for our collections over the holiday break. Unfortunately, we may not be able to reply to all the many letters, but here are some examples of the compliments we've received. Your best wishes and praise have been passed on to our collection contractor and the collection teams.
| Thank you so much for collecting our rubbish on Monday 6th despite it being out of cycle for collection, after the snowy weather. Fantastic service!! Having read in the press all the horrendous rubbish problems due to the weather, Christmas and Bank Holidays I think your Council should be congratulated. Well done There has been a lot of bad press regarding refuse collections around the country recently,we are very satisfied with the service that we have received especially getting the black bin emptied weekly over the Christmas period, well done. Also glad that we can now recycle cardboard. |
I wish to praise the way in which the refuse collection has been undertaken in Rother over the extended holiday period. Rother must be an example of how local control can get it right for local people Thank you again and I would like to wish you all and all the bin men a very happy New Year." | | Thank You to all the crew who provided an excellent service over Christmas and what a good idea it was to double up on refuse collections over the holiday period. I would just like to say how impressed and how grateful to you all for your bin collections over Christmas and the New Year. It was brilliant and so helpful to have our rubbish cleared |
And a final word from the Chief Executive........... Well over 100 other residents have either e-mailed, phoned in or written to us to say thanks for the service over the Christmas period. Full credit for this must go to our contractor Verdant, and specifically the men and women who are out there every day delivering what for many people is probably the most important service we provide. As a Bexhill resident myself, I have been delighted not just with the last months performance, but with the way in which the new collection of waste and recycling has bedded in across our district. As a resident and the Chief exec., I am particularly pleased with the fact that we have been able to respond to the requests from our communities to introduce cardboard recycling. Credit for this must go to my colleagues in our Amenities team, who have negotiated well with both Verdant, and East Sussex County Council(who have ultimate responsibility for waste disposal) and who have achieved this at no extra cost to our council taxpayers! Not surprisingly we are already receiving many complimentary remarks from residents about this.

Since opening the facility has successfully recycled green waste received via the 14 household waste recycling sites in East Sussex and Brighton & Hove as well as green waste from Hastings & Rother's kerbside collection schemes. Bags of compost are 50ltrs in capacity and cost £3.50 each or 3 for £10.
Recycling Batteries You can now recycle your old batteries in special bins located at the Bexhill, Battle and Rye Customer Help Points and the Town Hall. These are for dry domestic batteries only. Car batteries must be taken to the recycling facilities at Mountfield or Pebsham.
When we can't get to you...With our contractor Verdant, we make over 4 million collections of rubbish and recycling every year, 99.98% of which are first time and satisfactory. Our apologies if we've ever missed your bin. Service disruption may be caused by adverse weather conditions, emergencies or immediate road closures outside of our control. While we will do our very best to complete works on the scheduled day, this may not always be possible. We will always try to keep residents advised of any service interruptions, and the more serious events will have notes on the front page of Rother District Councils Website In extreme situations, our priority will always be to maintain the collection of black wheelie bins and rubbish and to clear any backlog as soon as possible.
