What can I do to keep myself safe?

What can I do to keep myself safe?

Crime Prevention Tips:

  • Never give out any details about your credit or debit cards to anyone ringing you or sending you an email. Banks and credit card companies will not ask for this information and, by the way, they cannot ask you to verify your PIN, because they do not have it.
  • Don't fall for the 'You are a Winner' message. If you have not entered you will not have won. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is and will cost you.
  • Be particularly careful with purses, wallets and credit/debit cards when you are out and about.
  • Lock your car when you park and leave NOTHING removable on display. A carrier bag full or recycling will be presumed to contain goods worth breaking in for.
  • When your home is empty and you will not be home before dark leave a light on or install a dusk to dawn light that will come on automatically and make it look as if someone is at home.  (this will put off most opportunist thieves)
  • If you have new electronic gadgets and other goodies, do not put the boxes outside where they are visible. They tell a potential thief that you have something new to steal and you might need to keep the boxes in case something goes wrong.
  • Remind any vulnerable friends and relatives about not opening the door to unknown callers. Bogus callers are very good at conning the brightest of us, let alone anyone nervous, lonely and vulnerable.
