Council Tax exemptions

Some properties are exempt from Council Tax, which means you do not have to pay Council Tax for them.

This is the full list of the different types of exemption:

Previously Class A 

An unoccupied and unfurnished property which needs or is undergoing major repairs or structural alteration is entitled to a discount of 50% for a maximum of 12 months. A full charge then applies.

Class B

Unoccupied property owned and previously used by a charity (exemption lasts for six months from last occupied date).

Previously Class C

From 1 April 2018 if your property is unoccupied and unfurnished, you still have to pay Council Tax at the full rate. No discount is available. 

Up to 1 April 2018 an unoccupied and unfurnished property is eligible for a 100% discount for a maximum period of one month, after which full Council Tax becomes payable. The discount lasts for one period of one month (up to 1 April 2018) from last occupied date, regardless of any change of liability or ownership.
