Councillors' Registrable Interests

Councillors are required to register their interests within 28 days of their election or appointment to office. These details are held on a register maintained by the Council's Monitoring Officer.

Information they are required to provide includes any business or authority where either it relates to or is likely to affect:

  • any body of which they are a member or in the position of general control or management and to which they are appointed or nominated by the authority;
  • any body exercising functions of a public nature; directed to charitable purposes; or of whose principal purposes includes the influence of public opinion or policy (including any political party or trade union), of which they are a member or are in a position of general control or management;
  • any employment or business carried on by them;
  • any person or body who employs or has appointed them;
  • any person, other than a relevant Authority (e.g. a County, District, Parish or Town Council or Police or Fire Authority) who has made a payment to them in respect of their election or any expenses incurred by them in carrying out their duties;
  • any person or body who has a place of business or land in the Authority's area, and in whom they have a beneficial interest in a class of securities of that person or body that exceeds the nominal value of £25,000 or one hundredth of the total issued share capital (whichever is the lower);
  • any contract for goods, services or works made between the Authority, the Member or a firm in which they are a partner, a company of which they are a remunerated director, or a person or body of the description specified in paragraph 6;
  • any person from whom they have received a gift or hospitality with an estimated value of at least £50;
  • land in the Authority's area in which they have a beneficial interest; and
  • any land where the landlord is their Authority and they are, or a firm in which they are a partner, a company of which they are a remunerated director, or a person or body of the description specified in paragraph 6 is, the tenant;

Within 28 days of becoming aware of any change to the interests registered, Councillors are also required to provide written notification to the Council's Monitoring Officer of the change.
