Review of Council Tax discount begins

A district-wide review of residents receiving discount on their Council Tax for living alone has begun.

The review of Single Person Discounts, which reduce Council Tax by 25 per cent, is part of regular checks carried out by local authorities to ensure that everyone claiming the discount is still eligible to do so.

Cllr Lord Ampthill, Rother District Council's portfolio holder for finance, said: "The vast majority of those claiming the discount are doing so correctly, but there may be some residents who have not reported a change in their circumstances that would change their entitlement.

"Identifying anyone no longer eligible for a discount helps us keep Council Tax as low as possible for all residents."

Rother District Council has joined the other district and borough councils in East Sussex to commission Datatank to carry out the review on their behalf.

Datatank will be contacting a number of residents currently receiving the discount asking them to complete a form to confirm their current circumstances.

There are currently 14,653 people in Rother claiming Single Person Discount, which reduces the annual Council Tax bill by more than £450 for a Band D property.

Residents will be given 14 days to return the form. Anyone failing to return their form could risk losing their Council Tax discount.
