Royal wedding celebrations to receive funding boost

Community celebrations to mark May's royal wedding could receive a financial boost thanks to Rother District Council.

Organisations hosting events to celebrate the marriage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be able to apply for up to £500 match funding for the festivities.

At its meeting on Monday, February 12, the district council's cabinet agreed a funding pot of £10,000 from the community grant scheme to promote community and neighbourhood events.

Cabinet members agreed to give £1,000 from the fund to a celebratory community event on the De La Warr terraces and lawns being organised by a group of local stakeholders, under the leadership of Howard Martin.

Cllr Ganly, chairman of Rother's Community Grants Panel, said: "We know that residents in the district will be keen to celebrate the royal wedding and we want to make sure as many people as possible have the opportunity to do so.

"We have seen how events of this kind can have a positive effect on communities by boosting resilience, tackling isolation and loneliness and encouraging future activity.

"Events supported by the district council to mark Her Majesty the Queen's Golden Jubilee in 2002 and her Diamond Jubilee in 2012 were a huge success, and we hope events this summer will be as well attended."

Applications for funding can be made between Thursday, February 22, and 9am on Monday, April 30, for events that will take place on or around the weekend of the wedding. Early applications are encouraged and will be decided on a first come, first served basis.

All projects must demonstrate a clear link to the royal wedding celebrations and benefit Rother residents.
